Spaniard Dionisio Aguado (1784-1849), a 19th-century guitarist-composer, is primarily remembered for his guitar method, Nuevo Método Para Guitarra. He was friends and duet partner with another 19th-century guitarist-composer, Fernando Sor—the composer of several pieces you played in this textbook.

The French word étude—estudio in Spanish—means study. Pieces with this moniker usually focus on a single technical or musical aspect, in this case, playing P-i-m-i arpeggios.

Aguado's Étude is based on the technique of holding a chord with the left hand and arpeggiating it with the P-i-m-i picking pattern. The chords change every 4 beats in lines 1 and 3 and every 2 beats in lines 2 and 4. The melody is in the bass, so pluck the bass notes with vigor. Aim for moderato or a peppy andante tempo.
