Minuet in A Minor was written by a prolific but little-known German Baroque composer, Johann Philipp Krieger (1649-1725). It is elegant and melancholy, and only slightly more difficult than the average solo in this textbook.
The minuet, a stately ballroom dance in triple meter, originated in France and was popular during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, particularly among the aristocratic class. It was often featured in Baroque dance suites and Classical symphonies. However, during the nineteenth century, the minuet was eclipsed by the waltz, which became the dance of both the aristocracy and middle class.
Minuet in A Minor by Krieger | Peter Kun Frary, guitar
Minuet in A Minor was written for the harpsichord, an early keyboard instrument, but it falls naturally on the guitar. The two voices or melodic lines—soprano and bass—are often locked in a call-and-response texture. Take care to sustain the dotted half notes while the opposing voice answers in quarter notes.
