Music History
We discussed Prehistory and the Ancient in the Elements unit. For the reminder of the semester, we’ll focus on the Post-Classical, Early Modern, and Late Modern eras:
Post-Classical
Overview
Our main objectives in this unit are to:
- Explore the life and times of medieval musicians.
- Understand characteristics of medieval style.
- Identify the seminal works of the era.
To acclimate to the era, begin with an overview of medieval culture:
1. Darkness into Light (Middle Ages)
Roman Catholic Church
Western music history begins with the Middle Ages. Why? The Roman Catholic Church allotted great resources towards the study and preservation of treatises, scores and artifacts. In other words, this is the first European music we know a lot about.
Coda
