Java (Rice) Sparrow | Mōʻiliʻili Community Garden | Honolulu HI

Java Sparrow standing guard while his friends raid the garden.  This handsome bird is also know as the Rice Sparrow due to noisy flocks feeding in rice fields. Now somewhat rare in their native Indonesia—the pet trade has reduced their numbers—they seem to be everywhere in Hawaii. I suspect our birds are the descendants of escaped pets.
