Ala Moana Fishing Circle • Honolulu, Hawaii, USA

In early Summer, men assemble in shallow water during twilight, form circles or crescents and battle our watery friends with wee fishing poles. And they catch tiny little fish and put them in buckets. What do with them? Boil them for soup? Bait? Whatever, every Summer I see men, both young and old, perform this strange ritual. I suspect it's the process they enjoy more that the catch. Standing in warm calm waters surrounded by white sand, ocean and a blazing sunset ain't torture and beats sitting in Honolulu traffic.
