Sausage Tree | Ala Moana Beach Park | Honolulu, Hawaii

The sausage tree (Kigelia africana) is a common sight in Ala Moana Beach Park, UH Manoa and Waikiki. When in season, the orchid shaped flowers dangle in groups on stalks, making for a beautiful bed of petals beneath the tree. The tree's name comes from the fruits hanging from vines that resemble sausages, albeit they appear more potato like tp me. These fruits as heavy as a bag of rice and as hard as wood, so napping beneath a sausage tree is probably not a good idea.
