Hamma Hamma Bridge | Hood Canal WA

The Hamma Hamma Bridge on Highway 101, built in 1923, is an ancient concrete affair, covered in cracks, repairs and colorful moss. Hamma Hamma is derived from the local Twana language and means “stinky stinky,” apparently referring to the abundant shellfish in the area.

I've driven through Hamma Hamma dozens of times on my way to Port Townsend. It's the middle of nowhere but is frighteningly beautiful. Most people don't notice the scenery but, instead, roar by in a blaze of automotive glory.
