Jefferson County Courthouse | Port Townsend WA

The quasi-Romanesque style of the Jefferson County Courthouse, designed in the late 19th century by H. H. Richardson, is daunting fortress and a little out of place in this small Victorian town. Inside, it's dark, musky, and boasts staircases that go on forever.

The 125 foot clocktower is the tallest structure in town and visble for miles in all directions. Indeed, the Courthouse was an ever present part of my life growing up in Port Townsend. I saw and heard the clocktower daily as I walked to school or I worked my paper route. I actually used it to tell time! Later, I dropped off forms to the offices, paid taxes and watched my mother being sworn in as a US citizen in a courtroom.
