Kinzie Battery | Port Townsend, Washington

During the 1960s, while still a runt, Kinzie Bunker was my favorite playground. In those days Fort Worden was a reform school for juvenile criminals, having been decommissioned as an Army base after the Korean War. My father was stationed there during its final military years. Most bunkers were off limits but, kids being kids, we snuck in and explored the endless tunnels and underground rooms. Now, as a beautiful state park, most of these bunkers are sealed and inaccessible to the general public.
