Peaceful scene outside the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Most of the Medieval section of Brugges is closed to motor vehicles, so bicycles are an ideal means of transport. Like Venice and Amsterdam, Brugges has a system of canals, albeit on a smaller scale. Unlike Venice and Amsterdam, the locals no longer use the canals for transportation but preserve them for historical value and tourists.

The Basilica of the Holy Blood is best known as the repository of a vial reputed to contain the blood of Jesus, and brought to Brugges by Crusaders in the 12th or 13th Century. You may touch the blood receptacle under supervision of a priest.
